I used to wonder…
I’ve been having a lot of conversations these days that I end up mentioning this phrase: “I used to wonder, growing up, how Germany was taken over by Nazis in the 1930s. How did people just let that happen?”
I then always answer my own question, “Now I know.” Because we’re seeing it in realtime. For the last nine years progressives have been warning that Trump is a wanna be dictator. It is now clear after his return to office that the “wanna be” is about to become superfluous.
Hitler took Germany from a democracy to a dictatorship in 53 days, using their constitution to grab power constitutionally. Trump now has that roadmap and has faithfully been following the directions that Hitler laid out.
I’ll be writing a lot more on the details of where exactly we are at the moment, but it’s changing so quickly, that is a moving target.
I did want to share an article I read this morning that expresses my frustration right now, and it succinctly answers the question at the opening of this article. We will never convince Trumpers that they are wrong. They are solidy in a cult, and until they discover on their own that they’ve been repeatedly lied to and that they voted against their own self interest, there’s not much hope in convincing them on how much danger we are in.
But it is vitally important that those of us who see the Republican party for what it has degenerated into, to speak up, and be active. I used to follow the normal axiom of not speaking about politics and religion in public. That time has passed. It is critical for all of us, especially leaders in the community that have influence over those in Trump land, to speak up and make their voices heard.
Dear Concerned Friend, You’re F*ckin’ Right I’m Angry. I Wish You Were.
This blog post by John Pavlovitz perfectly encapsulates how I’m feeling right now. If you choose to be around me right now, expect to have your values questioned. It might not be comfortable for you, but it is fucking important.
